MODULE 1 - WELCOME

Welcome Message / Who am I?

Hello and welcome to BIRTH DIVERSIFIED.

I am Chinelle, the owner and photographer behind Dear Little One and the founder of Birth United. I am an afro-caribbean woman originally from Trinidad & Tobago. I've grown up in the Tampa Bay, Florida area. I've been a photographer since 2010 and shot my first birth in the spring of 2011.

I want to personally thank you for investing your time, energy, and money into this course so that you can bring about change in your personal community by being truly diverse and inclusive.

You likely purchased this course because you are in a place within your business where you may be realizing that you are lacking something important in your portfolio - diversity - and you want to do something about it.

There are some key things to consider when you set out to intentionally do this. So, before we get started, check your motives. Make sure that you are doing this because you belive that every birth, regardless of the race of the family involved, deserves to be documented and not because you are just trying to put a check in the box and tokenize women of color. Being truly diverse extends past “looking the part” into shifting your whole way of thinking and being - it’s a cultural movement.

In this course, you will specifically find tools to help you navigate clients of color - particularly those who identify as “black” as that is what I personally can confidently speak on. The content will obviously be able to identify with other marginalized families as well, but they will not be the main focus here. We will dive into a little history, racism, alarming statistics and how you, as someone who does not identify as a person of color (POC) can respectfully and consciously attract clients of color.

I hope you find this course insightful and helpful and use it to make a change in the birth community. And remember, I am just one person. I do not represent the entire black race. My insight is from my personal experiences in the United States and research. This information should be used as a GUIDELINE, NOT THE STANDARD.

10-day journal

This course is should only take about 10 days (but don’t feel rushed) and for 10 days, while you’re also going through each lesson, I would like you to take a few minutes to complete a journal entry based on the prompts in the PDF below.

You aren't obligated to share your answers with me or the class, however you are welcomed to if you are looking for feedback/dialogue about your thoughts and feelings.
