The lack of cultural representation in the birth world is astounding! Images of caucasian women birthing are a dime a dozen, meanwhile POC struggle to find faces that look like ours amongst them. This is an issue because REPRESENTATION MATTERS. The more we see people who look like us birthing in different ways, makes it more likely that we would know that those options exist for us, too and maybe we can take that knowledge to start putting a dent on the maternal mortality rate amongst black women in the United States.

This course was created from the perspective of a black woman in the U.S. and is specifically made for white and white-presenting photographers and birth workers who desire to have a more diverse clientele while diversifying their lives. This course covers things like racism, history, birth culture, tokenism, as well as includes ways that you could actually diversify your brand. Do the work it takes to be a true ally and not just appear to be one.

what others have said about this course:

I really enjoyed this course. I think all white birth workers should be taking courses like this one and would recommend it to others. It's important to know the history of birth in this country (OB practices, granny midwives, current birth related statistics for women and babies of color. etc). We need to continue to break down this issues by listening to WOC, meeting their needs appropriately, and amplifying the stories they want the world to hear.

Heather N.

If y'all are looking for a way to be more inclusive and learn more about the history of birth for WOC in the states, you must read this asap! I signed up to be an Ally with Birth United and want to know more, learn more and support WOC through their birth process. It's hard to know where to start. How to help without making things worse or being worried I might offend someone out of ignorance. But change is up to us. We have to step out of our comfort zone and find a way to help--because WOC are dying during pregnancy and childbirth!!! We can not continue to be quiet!

Jessica W.
